It's a Ginger Celebration!

Musique - Red Headed Woman (well, you can hear the song in the background of this clip)

Last night, I joined the ranks of hot red heads (both real and dyed).  My hair has been dark brown since late last summer and I've been soooo sick of it.  I thought I wanted to go light brown, but my hair's been through some trauma so straight up bleaching would not exactly be the best decision.  My hairdresser suggested a partial foil now and then another one later and then we could work on getting it the proper light brown.  I agreed, but as soon as I got out of the salon and realized I looked like a mom and far too boring with those damn highlights, I had to take matters into my own hands (plus, I didn't have another $70 to shell out for a new color) and I dyed it Deep Copper.

I like to call my new color Coppery Ginger Carrot.  I was kind of unsure if I was truly happy with it - it's definitely pretty, but you can tell it's far, far from my natural color and I wonder if it suits me.  But then, the first song I heard when I got in my car this morning was Broken Bells' The Ghost Inside, whose video Christina Hendricks stars in.  I took that as a sign that I did the right thing.

In celebration of the new color (which I hope to keep at least until St. Patrick's Day so I can look faux-Irish - well, until people get up close enough and see that my shirt says "Kiss Me, I'm German"), here are pictures of some of my very favorite red heads:
Clara Bow, my most favorite (dyed) red head of all time!!
Jean Harlow's wig for Red Headed Woman prompted Bill Legender (Chester Morris) to exclaim "You have the reddest hair I've ever seen!"
Joan Crawford - she's been every color in the book, but this red is darling!
Ann-Margret - she's been every shade of red there is! I doubt there is a sexier red head in the world than Ann-Margret!
Christina Hendricks - pretty much the reason I decided to go orange instead of red-red.
Louise (aka Pandora) - she is just breathtaking!  I love her blog so, so much.
Alyson Hannigan - ahh, Willow Rosenberg, how I love thee.  You made Buffy so amazing and are such a treat to watch in anything you do.
Emma Stone - how can you not love this adorable girl?
Deborah Ann Woll - you are one sassy vampire, Jessica!
The whole Weasley clan - this is for you, Susan - you and your beloved ginger, Ron Weasley.  But also because the Weasleys are pretty badass.
Kate Winslet - she looks so stunning in Titanic.  I re-watched it recently and her gorgeous hair was another reason I wanted to go red.
Nicole Kidman - has she ever looked more lovely than she did in Moulin Rouge?  Good Lord, I love that movie!
Isla Fisher - she is just so freaking adorable!!  I could probably watch Confessions of a Shopaholic every day.  Well, maybe alternated with Hot Rod.
Amy Adams - cute as a blonde in Drop Dead Gorgeous, but I prefer her as a red head.
Rose McGowan (as Ann-Margret) - another lady who looks good in pretty much any hair color.
Emily Blunt - her hair in The Devil Wears Prada is absolutely gorgeous!
Moira Shearer - how could I forget her?!  I recently watched The Red Shoes and absolutely fell in love with her and her stunning hair.

Classic Movie Heaven

Musique - Cheek to Cheek by Fred Astaire

Oh my!  I'm in classic movie heaven!!  In 2006, I remember reading online that the Academy was going to screen the original 1927 version of Chicago somewhere in California.  Being a Washington resident with not enough means to get to California for said screening, I was a bit bummed - but hopeful that they'd soon put the movie on DVD.

The whole reason I got into the 1920s back in 2005 was because of the 2002 version of Chicago.  I was planning on being a flapper for Halloween (I had the perfect hair for it, which is the basis for many of my costume choices, such as Cleopatra and Snow White).  I didn't want one of those ridiculous all-fringe dresses - I didn't know much about the 20s at that time, but I knew that I'd never seen a picture of a woman from the 20s in anything like those dresses.  So I bought a pattern for a dress that was based off of the dresses worn in Chicago and my mom and I sewed it together.  I bought the movie Chicago so that I could better get into character (I never half-ass a Halloween costume) and I fell in love with it.  I instantly became obsessed with the 20s and started watching silent movies and really soaking up all the information I could find on this decade.

I also bought the original play Chicago by Maurine Dallas Watkins, which came with the articles she had written for the Chicago Tribune about the real life murderesses that influenced the characters in her play.  I fell in love with this book too.  I was hooked on the 20s for life!  And yes, of course, I've seen the musical when it came to Seattle (not my favorite interpretation of this story & what's with the costumes?!) and the movie Roxie Hart with Ginger Rogers (not my favorite either - what's w/ her hair?!).  I was so excited to hopefully one day see the original 1927 movie version.

Recently, I discovered that they finally did put the original movie on DVD.  I happened upon this information by accident while reading a blog post on Tart Deco, where Steph talked about something being an extra on the restored 1927 Chicago.  I nearly died of happiness.  How had I not known that this had come about?!  I just bought it last Friday—and when I came home from work last night, it was sitting there on my doorstep!!  I am so excited to watch it!!

My other awesome classic movie purchase yesterday was this gem I found at Best Buy.  Seriously - 50 movies for only $14.99.  Usually these collections are full of crap, but this one has some amazing movies - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (the 1920 version w/ John Barrymore!), Nosferatu, a couple of Lon Chaney classics - Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera, Metropolis (!), and lots more.  I am in Bela Lugosi/Boris Karloff/Vincent Price heaven!!  I haven't seen most of these movies and I'm super pumped to see Vincent Price in The Last Man on Earth (I bet he's way better than Will Smith or Charlton Heston) and all of the Bela Lugosi flicks I haven't seen yet.  I am so set for Halloween this year - I can watch a different horror movie every day!!

Fictional Character Crushes

Musique - All I Do Is Dream of You by Debbie Reynolds and chorus

I know it's ridiculous, but when I was in junior high, I totally had a crush on Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Not that I ever wanted to make out with a cartoon turtle (because that's just weird and gross), but I loved me some Raphael.  He was just so badass!  I had a TMNT comic book where he said "Damn!" in it and I thought that was just so cool.

Now that I'm older, I have decidedly more human tastes in my fictional characters.  Even though these dudes don't really exist, I have the hots for them big time!
Sirius Black
Okay, so Gary Oldman is my #1 celebrity crush ever, but he plays some pretty f'd up characters that while I think they are sexy, I wouldn't want to make out with them (I don't really dig on murderers).  Sirius Black, on the other hand, is wonderful!!  J.K. Rowling really created a complex and interesting character and I'd like to think that I would have fallen for Sirius even if I hadn't known Gary Oldman would be playing him in the movies.  I love that Sirius is flawed, but means well, and is brave and has great love for Harry.  I was privileged enough to see the Harry Potter exhibit in Seattle and when I came upon Sirius' Order of the Phoenix outfit, I did a little dance/jumped around a lot.  I wanted to jump up and hug the mannequin wearing the clothes.  And then I almost spent $45 on a replica of Sirius' wand.  But settled for a $6 magnet.  And now I get to swoon every time I open my refrigerator.

Rosencrantz
Ah, young Gary Oldman!!  I love Rosencrantz's simplicity and wonder.  He's so much happier than Tim Roth's Guildenstern.  And oh boy, do I appreciate happiness in a guy!  Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a fantastic movie anyway, but I could watch it over and over again and discover something crush-worthy about Rosencrantz every time.

Edmund J. Exley
Okay, so he's kind of an uptight dick.  But he's an honest cop and he wants to do the right thing.  I confess, if I'd read the book before the movie was made, I probably would not have developed a crush on Exley.  I would have probably preferred Bud White.  But there's just something about the way Guy Pearce played him in L.A. Confidential that made him so appealing (and no, it's not just because Guy Pearce is incredibly hot).

Billy Lawler/Brad/Scotty Blair
I love, love, love those beautiful Busby Berkeley musicals that Warner Bros. put out in the early 1930s.  And Dick Powell just makes the perfect romantic lead for Ruby Keeler.  His characters in 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade just make me swoon and wish for that kind of guy to exist in 2011.

Sam Harmon
Dean Martin is appealing any old time, but especially in Ocean's 11.  How could any girl resist his smooth demeanor and beautiful voice?  Even though he's a casino robber, he's still a good guy - trying to patch up Danny and Bea's marriage, looking out for his buddies, trying to help Tony not be seen by the drunk girl (although I don't think kissing Shirley MacLaine was any hardship).  He's cool as a cucumber throughout the whole movie and boy is he yummy!

Turk Malloy
Okay yes, I have a crush on Scott Caan no matter what he plays.  But Turk is something special.  He's hilarious.  And I love a guy with a sense of humor.  He's also sexy, but not conceited (which is why I'm not including Tweeder from Varsity Blues on this list - too big of an ego for me, although he is SMOKING hot).  I guess I'm cool with casino robbers since Turk makes the second on my list.  But I think it's saying something that I am not including any of the other amazingly hot men from Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen.

Nate Archibald
I'm not normally into such pretty boys (especially ones with such pretty hair), but Nate's different.  Maybe it's Chace Crawford's eyes that make Nate so dazzling to me - I am definitely a sucker for pretty eyes.  But I think it's also that Nate stands up to people and is trying to live his own life, not the life his family chose for him.  And, although I abhor cheating, I'm not so sure I'd fault him for cheating on Blair with Serena (because if I was a dude, I'd be hard pressed to choose between those two ladies).  And besides, that was like ages ago!

Graham Simpkins
The Holiday is one of my favorite holiday movies ever.  It's just so romantic!  And Jude Law's character is irresistibly adorable.  Even though, I will admit, a dude with kids is a HUGE turn off for me.  But his kids have cute little English accents, so I could totally be okay with that.  I think it would be fantastic to find someone you feel such a connection with so quickly - especially one who's willing to admit his feelings first.  And who cries.  Not that I'm into crybabies, but the scene where Cameron Diaz comes back to find him crying is so flipping cute.

Dr. Watson
Yes, another Jude Law character (what can I say - he is mouthwateringly delicious).  I was seriously skeptical about watching Sherlock Holmes because I am a huge fan of the actual books.  And, as we know, the books are always better than the movies.  I was especially skeptical because I don't honestly recall Sherlock Holmes ever getting shirtless and beating the shit out of some guy in any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories.  However, I decided to put it in my Netflix queue and I'm honestly glad I did.  Guy Ritchie definitely took some liberties with the Sherlock Holmes characters, but that's his right as a director.  Dr. Watson is definitely doable, not only because Jude Law is hot, but because he's devoted to his fiancee Mary and also to his best friend.  And he can kick some ass (not unlike Sherlock).  PS - after reading up on the movie, I found out that the shirtless fight scene was not just an excuse to see a buff Robert Downey Jr. kick some dude's ass - this fight was referenced in the story, "The Sign of Four", where Holmes says to a man "I don't think you can have forgotten me. Don't you remember that amateur who fought three rounds with you at Alison's rooms on the night of your benefit four years back?"  So I guess it could have happened...

Don Lockwood
I think Gene Kelly is one of the dreamiest of dreamboats, so it's no wonder that I have a crush on Don from Singin' in the Rain.  But his character really is something to dream about - he's talented, he's a good friend, and he's persistent.  There's just something about his trying to find Kathy after she runs out of the party where he insulted her and she ended up accidentally shoving a cake in Lina's face.  He wants to apologize and he's smitten and it's adorable.  He's a big Hollywood star who could have anyone he wants, but he wants this little dancer from the Cocoanut Grove.  And who can resist a guy who sings and dances in the rain just because he's so in love with you?

Gabey
Hmmm, maybe Gene Kelly is his most irresistible to me when he's pursuing the object of his affections all over town...  Because that's what makes his character in On the Town so appealing to me.  He fell for Miss Turnstiles right away and he's not afraid to try and find her in a town as big as New York.  But he's not such a stalker that he won't take no for an answer.  When Vera-Ellen's Ivy (aka Miss Turnstiles) initially turns him down at the dance studio, he's disappointed, but he's not going to force her to go out with him.  But of course, Ivy is just playing hard to get because seriously, how could anyone turn this guy down?!

Perfumes of the 1920s and 1930s

Musique - Get Out and Get Under the Moon by Annette Hanshaw

As a huge fan of the 1920s and 1930s, I like to emulate 20s and 30s style when I can.  This includes perfume.  I searched everywhere online for perfumes that were created and/or were very popular during these two decades.  I came up with the following list of perfumes that are still available today (although perhaps the formulations may have changed a bit over time):

Caron:
Alpona (1939)
Bellodgia (1927)
En Avion (1929)
Fleur de Rocaille (1934)
French Cancan (1936)
Narcisse Blanc (1922)
Nuit de Noël (1922)
Pois de Senteur de Chez Moi (1927)

Jean Patou:
Adieu, Sagesse (1925)
Amour Amour (1925)
Cocktail Bitter Sweet (1930)
Joy (1930)
Moment Suprême (1929)
Que sais-je? (1925)

Guerlain:
Candide Effluve (1922)
Coque d’Or (1937)
Djedi (1927)
L'Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat (1920)
Liu (1929)
Shalimar (1925)
Sous Le Vent (1934)
Véga (1936)
Vol de Nuit (1933)

But, when I actually tried some of these perfumes on, I didn't like them.  They were too strong, too powdery, just not "me".  And yes, I know, perfumes were much stronger back then, so it's no surprise that I didn't like them.  But I'm not giving up - I'm sure there's a vintage perfume out there that suits my tastes!

These Are Some More of My Favorite Things

Musique - Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses

I'm back to count some more of my blessings, or rather, in this case, things I really, really love (and am blessed to have them in my life).

Old Christmas movies.  There's just something magical about old Christmas movies.  They really put me in more of a holiday mood than newer movies do (although I still loves me some newer holiday movies - Joyeux Noël, The Holiday, and Scrooged are some of my favorites).  They're a bit sweeter and more beautiful than newer movies.  I always fill my Netflix queue up with lots of old holiday flicks every December!

Old movies in general.  1920s and 1930s movies to be more specific.  If it's black and white, it's golden!  (Gone With the Wind is an exception - that is one outstanding color picture!)  I don't know what I'd do without Clara Bow, Norma Shearer, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell, Jean Harlow, Frederic March, Gary Cooper, Miriam Hopkins, and sooooo many others to entertain me!  And I can't forget my favorite actress of all time - Grace Kelly!  While I lean toward the 20s and 30s, I definitely have a soft spot for her 1950s movies.  There's just something so glamorous about old Hollywood that I don't get from newer movies.  I am so blessed to have seen so many wonderful old movies in my lifetime!!

Punk and Ska covers of Christmas songs.  Most notably:
Well, that's all for today - I'll try to keep my mind on the good in life and I hope everyone out there does too!!

I'll Fall Asleep Counting My Blessings

Musique - Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep by Bing Crosby

So, I was having a frustrating day and I was focusing on all that's wrong with my life right now and venting on Facebook and complaining (even though I am a huge fan of Louise Hay and firmly believe that your thoughts create your life).  So then I decided to take a break and made a list of some of my blessings and things I love:

My beautiful cats, Scarlett and Melanie.  Oh my GOD, do I love them!!  I got these two adorable black cats as kittens two years ago from a shelter.  They are seriously the closest thing to children I will ever have (because I don't ever want children).  They are the first animals I've ever raised on my own, so there is a special connection I've never had before with previous pets.  As a lover of all things Halloween, of course I had to get black cats, but these black cats were destined for me and I am so happy they are in my life.  I might sound like a crazy cat lady, but I don't care.  They show me unconditional love every single day and I will ever be grateful for them.

My beautiful PT Cruiser.  I've wanted one for some time because the design was inspired by 1930s cars.  I finally got mine in June of 2009.  It was obviously meant for me - black, only slightly used (it's a 2008), and under $10,000!  I love the way it drives and the way it looks and the little back trunk area that can hold stuff (or a person if it's too crowded in the cabin).  I love how I've adorned it with Bouncing Souls, No Doubt, Mad Rad, Germany, and Norway stickers (Belarus is next - I just need to find a Belarussian flag sticker and then the triumvirate of my ancestry will be completely represented on my car!).  It's super reliable and I love it lots!

Living in West Seattle.  It's glorious living in a beach town, especially one filled with such nice people as West Seattle.  It seems like everyone's a bit more polite here and a bit healthier too.  Plus, my apartment is across the street from the water, so I can look out my window and see the Puget Sound!  There's also a very nice spot a few minutes walk from my place where I can go and sit on some stone steps and watch the waves come in and out.  This is my favorite spot and I go here a lot when I need to clear my head or get happy.  It always calms and relaxes me and puts me in a better mood.  In fact, another one of my blessings is that in midst of writing this blog post, I realized that it was time for me to go home (yay!) so I drove home and as I saw the beautiful Puget Sound ahead of me and decided to take a few minutes to sit by the water.  The bad day I'd had was still sitting heavy on me, so this time to just sit quietly and contemplate the vastness and beauty of the water and hear the little waves come in and out calmed me right down and made me feel very peaceful.  And now here I am, back at the blog post. :)

My family.  This is us back in the early 80s.  Gee, I loved bows on my head even back then. :)  They are the best and most supportive family ever.  My sister is my best friend and my parents are ALWAYS there for me - no matter what.  I have been ridiculously blessed to have them be my family.
